Spec sheet 001 / Policy reading

A line-by-line tour of the declarations page

The declarations page is the summary of your policy. It is two pages that answer most questions, if you know where to look.

Summary

  1. It lists who and what is covered, for how long, and the limits and deductibles.
  2. Check it every renewal for errors in names, vehicles and addresses.
  3. Keep a current copy where you can find it fast.

Section 1.0

Top block: who and when

The policy number, the policy period, the named insured and the address where the vehicle is kept appear first. If any of these is wrong, tell your insurer.

Section 2.0

Vehicles and drivers

  • Year, make, model and VIN of each vehicle.
  • Listed drivers and any excluded drivers.
  • Lienholder, if you have a loan.

Section 3.0

Coverages and limits

Each coverage, such as liability, collision and comprehensive, is listed with its limit or deductible. This is the table to read twice.

Section 4.0

Endorsements

A list of forms that add or change coverage. If you do not know what one means, ask your insurer to explain it in plain words.
